The Department of Bioengineering was started in Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore in 2003 to develop a platform to apply engineering knowledge to healthcare and medical research. Bioengineering has engineering at its core, and includes the disciplines of physics, mechanics, electronics, and computational methods applied to physiology and medicine. Bioengineering at CMC involves basic science and applied research in medical instrumentation, prostheses, mathematical analysis of physiological processes, biomechanics of musculoskeletal systems, motor control/learning, and neurorehabilitation.
Bioengineering department in CMC works closely with several other departments in CMC. Our significant work has been in prostheses and assistive devices, EMG analysis, electrodiagnostic devices, and neurorehabilitation technology. The department has electronics and mechanical fabrication and testing labs, as well as tools for embedded software development. Devices developed in the department are in use in several labs in CMC and other institutions.
